It’s the room where I’m constantly making special memories-cooking holiday dinners for family, having friends over for dinner, and of course, making casual dinners for my husband and children. Ever notice how during a party everyone seems to make their way to the kitchen? The kitchen’s always the heart of every home, and it’s where my family always gathers. Today, Brenda joins use to share with us some of her insights on being "Home and Away" and to celebrate the publication of her third novel, Recipe for a Happy Life, by giving away a copy to one lucky reader in the US. Definitely a big ingredient in her "recipe for a happy life!" With a Bachelor of Science in Human Service Studies from Cornell University and a Juris Doctorate from Hofstra Law School, Brenda never lost her flair for all things dramatic and an interest in one day becoming a writer. This dream came true with the publication of Scot on the Rocksin April, 2007. If I've learned anything over the past couple of years, it's that there is really no clear-cut answer to that question because what makes a happy life is different from person to person.

“I eat ten raisins (16) and five almonds (35) and a green bellied pear (121) (=172).”(p. Anderson captures Lia’s obsession with calories following each part of her ‘meals’ with numbers in parentheses. Lia continually uses phrases like, “when I was a real girl” to describe when she was younger and before she began starving herself. The story of the girls’ friendship unfolds through flashbacks and Lia’s visions of Cassie’s ghost. She opens with the death of Lia’s friend and partner in self harm, Cassie. Lia spends most of the novel trying to avoid hearing it.Īnderson portrays Lia from the inside out with stirring and poignant language. Cassie leaves Lia a message before she dies in a hotel room alone. Lia says that they are Wintergirls and they have made a pact to be the skinniest girl in school. The dog becomes frantic and begins to froth at the mouth, eventually collapsing. The dogs appearance indicates that something drastic has happened to the house's former inhabitants, and the dog goes from door to door of the house looking for its family, but it finds no one. Once "huge and fleshy," the dog is now "gone to bone and covered with sores" (2). It was almost as if the house was paranoid, but it worked until this day.Ī dog entered the house because the house recognized its voice. It carefully asked for the password if anything approached the house, such as foxes or cats, and it shut the windows and drew the shades if a bird flew near the house. This continued vigilance and activity had saved the house from destruction in the past. The weather box continues to give the weather and clothing suggestions. The breakfast stove cooks the typical breakfast: eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, and milk. It is completely encapsulated by rubble and destruction.Įven though it appears that no one is currently living in the house, the house's automated system continues as if nothing has changed. The house is the only house left standing in the surrounding area. The house's voice is clearly meant for someone, but no one is present to listen. Instead, the house is automated, calling out to its supposed inhabitants the time of day and their upcoming activities. The story begins with a house beginning to stir and wake up - but not in the traditional sense. In some cases, Daphnia populations were nearly wiped out by predation. The researchers found that while high predation levels reduced parasitism in Daphnia - providing partial support for the healthy herds hypothesis - populations of those poppy seed-sized crustaceans were often dramatically reduced, as well. Their study system consisted of predatory fly larvae that feed on the water flea Daphnia dentifera, which hosts a virulent fungal parasite. In a study published online April 26 in the journal Ecology, a University of Michigan-led research team used a pint-sized predator-prey-parasite system inside 20-gallon water tanks to test the healthy herds hypothesis. Even so, hard evidence supporting the hypothesis is scarce, and in recent years many of its assumptions and predictions have been questioned. The healthy herds hypothesis has even been used to suggest that manipulating predator numbers to protect prey might be a useful conservation strategy. It proposes that predators can help prey populations by picking off the sick and injured and leaving healthy, strong animals to reproduce. This idea has been widely accepted by biologists for many years and was formalized in 2003 as the healthy herds hypothesis. I recently spoke with Eubanks to about some of the main themes in her book. Eubanks examines these technologies, detailing the ways they can sometimes compromise the rights of the very people they supposedly help. Automated systems that gauge eligibility for Medicaid and food stamps, databases that match homeless people to resources, and statistical tools that detect cases of child abuse all hold the potential to revolutionize welfare programs. In it, Eubanks studies some of the seemingly neutral-and even well-meaning-technologies that promise to streamline the U.S. It’s this speech that Virginia Eubanks, an associate professor of political science at the University at Albany, SUNY, comes back to at the end of her new book Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. We then played our version of Pictionary we wrote down nouns from the books and the kids took turns drawing them while everyone else guessed what the word was. We then went through most of our discussion questions (listed below), although we had a lot and didn’t have enough time to go through them all. As the girls came in, we had them fill out a sheet that asked them 1) which Penderwick sister is your favorite? 2) which Penderwick sister are you most like? and 3) what do you think would be a good title for a Sabrina Starr book? We tallied the answers and used them to start the discussion. I just love the Penderwicks books and the first one makes a great title for a summer book club. This time we read The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall. This is another book club I did last summer with another librarian. She meets a boy named Michael, who is strangely sad over his mother. Her counselor arranges for her to spend recess with the younger kids. She is awkward and pedantic, seeing things in black and white, and referring to her deceased brother as "Devon who is dead" when talking to her father.Ĭaitlin's behaviors are perceived as "weird". Due to Caitlin's condition, she finds it difficult to cope with her feelings about what has happened. Her older brother Devon has just been killed, along with a teacher and another student, in a tragic school shooting. The book centers around the girl whose brother was killed in a school shooting.ġ0-year-old Caitlin Smith has Asperger’s syndrome and is preoccupied with drawing and dictionaries.
